VIPS: That YOU may know!

01

Jenny Simpson

I wanted to start with Jenny Simpson becuase she is one of the most moderate athletes that I talk about in my capstone. Several of the athletes that are presented are people who are victims of overtraining or have come very close to it. However, I enjoyed reading and writing about Jenny because although she is a two-time olympian athlete, she has a great grasp on what her body can take. She focuses on the desire to train throughout her life, rather than killing her young body by working out multiple times in a day. Her main message when it comes to overtraining is  to young high school athletes - like  you and me. She warns us to enjoy high school sports and our youth because it's just going to get harder in college and beyond.

Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao is a little different than Simpson, whereas his trainer has several concerns that Pacquiao may overtrain. His trainer, Freddie Roach, says that Pacquiao is one of the hardest workers he has ever seen. Roach's concerns with Pacquiao are not that he won't be succesful and succeed, but he is concerned that he may overtrain.

Melvin Gordon

Melvin Gordon is very similar to Manny Pacquiao, and that is why I chose to put them in the middle of the "VIPS or featured athletes." Both of them work extremely hard; however, people are concerned that their body may take a beating later in life. All throughout high school, college and now into the pros, Gordon would not and will not settle for the bare minimum. He always has to push the intensity,  or throw in a few extra sets to make sure he is working the hardest. While both Paquiao and Gordon have succeeded, their drive and desire to be great creates several concerns from their coaches and trainers that they may overtrain.

04

David Goggins

David Goggins is a different animal than any of the athletes stated before. He is an extreme athlete. He is also a member of the U.S. armed forces, but his accomplsihments go beyond just that. He is an endurance athlete, and your jaw might just drop when you hear the marathons he has ran. He has ran 200 miles in under 48 hours to raise money for charities. Not to forget that he has torn his quad and broken his foot while running these marathons, and he never quits. Goggin's messege is that if he is not pushing himself to become a better human being, than he is not living.

The "SEAL"

The final athlete I wanted to discuss was "SEAL." Seal was not given a name, but he represents all U.S. Navy Seals, and exemplifies the toughness and grit that is instilled into a person through Navy Seal training. For example, the specific Navy Seal that I read and wrote about had this rule, and he believed it. The rule was that when your body is telling you that you are done, you're only 40% done, and your mind must make your body push through the pain no matter what. When it comes to training when you're a Navy Seal, overtraining isn't even in the dicussion.
